A Public Profession of a Personal Decision

As we have been announcing for the past couple of weeks, we will have a baptism service this Sunday morning, 9 a.m. at Pine City Beach. (Don't forget your lawn chairs and sunglasses!)

Let me remind you of several things concerning this special time for our faith family.

Baptism does not make you a member of God's family - only faith in Christ does that. Baptism shows you are a part of God's family. It is a step of personal obedience to Christ that declares your faith in Him, identifies you with the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, symbolizes your death to your old life, & announces your new life in Christ! It is a celebration of your inclusion in God's family!

In the New Testament, people were baptized as soon as they believed. Therefore, every believer in Jesus Christ should follow the Lord in baptism no matter what age they are. If you have children or teenagers that have received Christ & haven't been baptized, this would be a wonderful opportunity to encourage them to obey Christ & follow Him. Or, if you have been saved for a time & not been baptized, this is your opportunity to follow Christ as well.

This will not be our Sunday worship service. We will have our usual morning service at the Lighthouse @ 10:30 a.m. It would be wonderful if you could make both services!!

This week's 545 (Five Minutes 4 Five Days) for our "Summer in the Psalms" Sermon Series.

Key thought: God is able to defend us from the lies spoken against us—this causes us to worship Him.

Monday
Read Psalm 5
Which verses or phrases personally struck you most from this psalm, and why?

Vs. 1-3 - Regular communication is a vital facet for any relationship & especially necessary for a strong relationship with God. We need to communicate with Him daily. Do you have a regular time to pray & read God’s Word?

Prayer is how we speak to God & Bible reading is how God speaks to us. Remember we need both!

Tuesday
Vs. 4-6 - God does not condone or excuse even the smallest sin. As we grow spiritually our sensitivity to sin increases.

Read Romans 1:18-32

What is your reaction to sin in your life? Are you insensitive, unconcerned, disappointed or comfortable? What sin do you struggle with most & what can you do to overcome it?

Wednesday
Vs. 7-8 - David wants clarity of God's will for him in the here & now; he wants to know now what to do.

“Lead me” is reminiscent of being a sheep with God as the caring Shepherd who leads His own through the difficulties & enticements of the world to His greener pastures.

Read Psalm 23

What specific areas of your life do you need special leadership about right now? You can pray vs. 8 for your own life!

Thursday
Vs. 9-10 - David felt so passionately about his enemies that he may have overstated his case & lost his objectivity about the situation.

Have you ever been lied to or about & lost complete confidence & respect in someone? Have you ever said, “I can’t forgive that person?” Do you think God wants you to live in unforgiveness? What degree of forgiveness does God call us to?
Read Matthew 18:21-35

Friday
Vs. 11-12 - The psalm closes with a note of encouragement (be glad... sing for joy... rejoice) that God blesses & protects those who love Him.

Do you really believe this? Have you seen God’s blessings & protection this past week?

Read Romans 8:1-2, 28-39

Remember, we are “more than conquerors through Him who loved us!”

This Summer's Gonna Be Good!

The book of Psalms has been and continues to be an irreplaceable devotional guide, prayer book, and hymnal of the people of God. The Hebrew title is "the book of praises”. The Greek translation of the Old Testament used psalmos, which means "a song sung to the accompaniment of a stringed instrument." The King James Version adopted the word, and thus we have the book of Psalms.

Some of the psalms are laments to the Lord, written by people in dire circumstances. There are also messianic psalms that point forward to the Lord Jesus Christ. There are also psalms of praise and thanksgiving, royal psalms, wisdom psalms, psalms of affirmation and trust, penitential psalms, and even imprecatory psalms calling down God's wrath on the enemy. We will consider each of these categories as we meet them in our studies

Primarily, the psalms are about God and His relationship to His creation, the nations of the world, Israel, and His believing people. He is seen as a powerful God as well as a tenderhearted Father, a God who keeps His promises and lovingly cares for His people. The psalms also reveal the hearts of those who follow Him, their faith and doubts, their victories and failures, and their hopes for the glorious future God has promised. In this book, we meet all kinds of people in a variety of circumstances, crying out to God, praising Him, confessing their sins and seeking to worship Him in a deeper way. In the book of Psalms, you meet the God of creation and learn spiritual truths from birds and beasts, mountains and deserts, sunshine and storms, wheat and chaff, trees and flowers. You learn from creatures of all sorts—horses, mules, dogs, snails, locusts, bees, lions, snakes, sheep, and even worms. The psalms teach us to seek God with a whole heart, to tell Him the truth and tell Him everything, and to worship Him because of Who He is, not just because of what He gives. They show us how to accept trials and turn them into triumphs, and when we've failed, they show us how to repent and receive God's gracious forgiveness. The God described in the book of Psalms is both transcendent and immanent, far above us and yet personally with us in our pilgrim journey. He is "God Most High" and "Immanuel—God with us."
